Hiss and suspend
A thin, steady "sss" shows at once whether the air is even. Stopping the air without closing the throat (the suspension) teaches the body, not the throat, to manage breath.
How to do it
- Breathe in for four.
- Hiss on "sss" for the count, as evenly as a tyre losing air.
- Pause the air with the ribs, throat open, then hiss again.
Remember The hiss never wobbles.
Where it comes from
More breath
Farinelli breathing
Equal counts in, hold and out, getting longer each round.
Breath pulses: S and SH
Short, sharp pulses on S wake up the muscles of the belly that support the voice; long S and SH test the steadiness in between..
The growing phrase
Each phrase is two notes longer than the last, so the breath has to last a little longer every time.
