Farinelli breathing
Equal counts in, hold and out, getting longer each round. It trains slow, controlled breathing out, which is what a long phrase needs.
How to do it
- Breathe in through the nose for the count, low into the belly and ribs.
- Hold with the throat open (as if about to yawn), not locked.
- Breathe out silently for the same count. Each round adds two counts.
Remember Ribs stay wide while the air goes out.
Where it comes from
More breath
Hiss and suspend
A thin, steady "sss" shows at once whether the air is even.
Breath pulses: S and SH
Short, sharp pulses on S wake up the muscles of the belly that support the voice; long S and SH test the steadiness in between..
The growing phrase
Each phrase is two notes longer than the last, so the breath has to last a little longer every time.
